Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is a new addition to the Samsung Galaxy S-series tablets. It is a follow-up model to Galaxy S4. The device was revealed on (31st July) earlier than its launch date, that is 6th September. It comes with more enhanced features than its predecessor, Galaxy S4.

Galaxy Tab S6: Features

1. Sleek Design

Galaxy Tab S6 weighs around 420 grams with a thickness of 5.7mm. This sleek design offers greater portability than its predecessor. The back is aluminum build with dual cameras incorporated at the top. The S-Pen is attached to the rear body just below the dual camera.

Samsung has adopted a minimalistic design with this tab. It’s both modern and simple at the same time. The design speaks business and is probably aimed for that audience. Its price is also a testament to that, but we’ll discuss it in more detail later.

The front is 10.5 inches screen with thin bezels. It has the 8MP front camera at the top and incorporates an on-screen optical fingerprint scanner. Not many tabs have that. It’s a good thing that feature is making its way to the tablet scene.

The tablet comes in three color variants as shown in three pictures above.

2. Display

The 1600 x 2560 pixels, 10.5 inches WQXGA Super AMOLED display comes unchanged in the new Galaxy tab S6.

However, this display is sharp and colorful. Most consumers seem to be satisfied with it, that is why Samsung has made no changed to the display. In fact, even if the display quality was increased, not many people would notice the difference as the changes will be subtle.

3. Performance and Battery

The SnapDragon 855 octa-core with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage in base models allows multitasking and gaming on your device. The processing capacity is powerful enough to support games like Fortnite at better frame rates.

With Samsung DeX, the device performed well and didn’t show any lag or performance issues. It means you can watch Netflix on your LED with DeX enabled on your S6 tab. Galaxy tab S6 has a smaller battery (7040 mAh) than its predecessor. Samsung claims that the battery will provide a full day backup.

However, when compared with phones there is a huge difference. Most phones average around at 3000mAh, even with screen sizes of up to 6 inches. As a result, in general, both phones and this tablet will offer a similar battery timing for similar usage.

4. The Dual Camera

S6 tab comes with a dual-camera. While the predecessor lacked this feature. The new ultra-wide (123 degrees) lens somewhat tries to capture the perspective of a human eye. While the 13MP rear camera is seen to be slightly improved. The camera has better colors and sharpness.

5. The S-Pen

In Galaxy tab S4, the S-Pen was placed in the book cover keyboard. However, this has been changed in the Galaxy tab S6. It is now integrated at the rear magnetically. When it is attached in place, it starts charging and gets full in about 90 minutes. The easy charging mechanism means that prolonged use is not a problem.

The S-Pen in Galaxy tab S6 has many cool functionalities. From drawing to controlling device camera, the S-Pen can do it all. All you need is to press the button on it and the rest is just a piece of cake. With S-Pen you can perform many shortcuts on the tab. Especially with the camera.

It is very convenient for graphic designers and artists. They can create their works on the go with the easy of their own studio. While it is not meant to be the main device, it can serve to complement their work. However, if you are looking for a more serious machine, this is what you should consider:

6. New Book Cover Keyboard

The Book Cover Keyboard has been changed. It can now be split into two parts. A stand and a keyboard. Particularly because Samsung consumers were not happy with the book cover keyboard of the S4 tab. Keyboard now includes a touchpad so that you may not need an external mouse. With these changes, it feels kind of a laptop.

While it is not meant as a replacement of your laptop, it does offer these nifty new features which extend the range of tasks that a tablet can do efficiently.

The keyboard comes with a shortcut key that takes you from Android to DeX mode. DeX mode is a desktop-like PC mode for the S6 tab.

7. Game Booster

Samsung Galaxy tab S6 includes a mode called “Game Booster”. It uses AI to improve gaming performs. You can see all the stats of your phone while you are in the game. It also incorporates discord in the game launcher so that you don’t have to quit your game for it.

Pros and Cons

PROSCONS
Sleek design offers more portability. Slightly over-priced.
Better performance in gaming and multitasking. No noticeable change than its predecessor.
The S-Pen is integrated well. Many features that don’t seem to be useful at all. Like, the gestures with S-Pen.

Update: The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is out! It is now available on Amazon.

Galaxy Tab S6: Price

The basic model with 6GB RAM and 128 GB Storage will cost around $649. The upgraded model comes with 8GB of RAM and 256 GB storage and that might cost around 730$. The price seems slightly higher but that is typical of Samsung flagship products.

Galaxy tab S6: Review

To buy a Galaxy Tab or a laptop?

The Galaxy Tab is in no way a replacement to a laptop. Sure it has many features that it shares with a laptop, it simply lacks the performance and battery capability that a laptop offers. Its size is its biggest constraint and at the same time, its biggest asset.

What it lacks in power, it delivers in portability. It is simply a compromise between a phone and a laptop, trying to bring the best of both worlds in one device.

It shares distinguishing traits with both laptops and phones. You can snap pictures as you would with your phones. Or you can set it up and use the keyboard cover to use the trackpad in addition to the touch display. The DeX mode aims to bridge the gap in the software perspective.

Because for most people, it is the Operating System which defines the use of a device. Android means phone, and Windows means laptops and desktops.

But when it comes to what to buy, it comes down to personal preference. In very rare cases it can be used as a substitute for a laptop, but in almost no case can it be a substitute for a mobile phone.

If your laptop usage is limited to light office work, or writing, or some light art and design, then this will do. However, when it comes to heavier tasks, the Galaxy Tab S6 can not be used as a standalone device.

We hope you enjoyed our review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6. It’s one of the biggest releases of 2019 and is shaping up to be among the top 10 tablets of 2020, maybe even of all time.
